Shochu-Geiko in this context is summer training or mid summer training. This is training when the weather is hot. The idea is to train even when the circumstances are not ideal and the body is not operating at peak performance. It is not about pushing the body to extremes but rather to get used to training when it is uncomfortable or unpleasant. To find ways of continuing training even in hard circumstances shows commitment and dedication to your chosen art and even though typically this is associated with karate in our experience is something to consider for all of the training we do.
We have a spell of hot weather at the moment and we encourage our students to continue training through these times. Below are some tips and hints to get the most out of your training in this weather:
Do still attend. It may be uncomfortable but any break in training can end up being one that sets your goals back.
Hydrate prior to training. Many only drink when thirsty having a regular top up in fluids helps keep your body balanced and hydrated so you can train more effectively.
Hot weather can often make you not want to eat as you usually do, you have to feed the engine if its going to operate effectively. Make sure you eat regularly and well.
When training remember that you will overheat if you push too hard, keep it steady.
Training should always challenge you mentally and physically, pushing through in challenging circumstances is always going to be more rewarding so go for it.
